[Revision 20020919]
My topic will explore the problems of providing legal assistance to parents of children with disabilities guaranted a free and appropriate public education under the IDEA at voluntary mediations, impartial due process hearings and civil litigation. A couple of solutions will be proposed and assessed:
1. changing the voluntary mediation process to a more formal hearing through attnorney's trained in negotiations and ediation, and knowledgeable in special education law so that any settlement agreement between parents and districts will be more likely to provide a better placement for the child and fewer inequities in the process, and
2. altering fee shifting arrangements to include IEP meetings, which are not covered by the attorney's fees statutes or case law.
[Second Revision 20020919]
The problems of poorer parents and children with disabilites covered under the IDEA in obtaining legal assistance and proper placement for a free and appropriate public education can be solved through or by 1. voluntary mediation hearings conducted by attorneys trained in mediation techniques and knowledgable in special education law to ensure a proper placement, and 2. altering the fee shifting provision to include IEP meetings.

The practice of law is beseiged
with new forms of competition, most of which serves to place more power
in the hands of the client. The "digital marketplace" requires firms to
rethink the methods by which value is added to client relationships.
Firms seeking to enhance competitive position should consider the concept
of "self help legal counsel." Self-help legal counsel
involves the sharing of
limited and general legal knowledge through the use of preprogrammed logic.
Attendant to this solution is a plethora of complicated legal and ethical
issues. This paper will address the economic impetus for such a radical
solution and analyze issues concerning the unauthorized practice of law,
confidentiality, attorney-cleint relationship, and attorney-client privilege
within the context of a self-help legal CD-ROM marketed to hospital clients.

* I want to add that this is perhaps not the only solution that I will propose, but it is the one that I can think of right now.
Title: Women, Partners and Mothers: The Economic Inequalities of Women Lawyers in Private Practice
Summary: I intend to
explore the reasons behind the lower number of women in the higher eschelons
of law practice. I believe these economic ineqities are primarily
a result of women being the child-bearing sex, putting motherhood at
odds with significant financial
success in private practice. After a description of the problem,
including statistics and analysis, I intend to make the argument that choosing
motherhood is in effect not choosing equal income and success as compared
to men. Finally, I intend to propose various solutions to this problem.

efficient representation to their clients."

Examining a legal residency training program as a method of improving legal access, experiential training, and the public perception of lawyers.
Revised 20020915:
The problems of decreasing affordable access to legal assistance, lack of experiential training, and low public perception of lawyers can be improved by instituting a legal residency training program as an additional requirement for admission to the bar.
